Week 0: Before the First Class

a) Best piece of creative work coming into this course

This is one of my year 12 HSC Body of Work pieces. It is a lino cutting printed onto very thin paper with photo released images along the top and bottom of the work. This is the 2nd piece out of 4 pieces that i arranged to talk about the gender inequality in India that i noticed during an immersion in 2014. Women (and children) were overworked and underpaid in comparison to men. I witnessed this in Darjeeling, where young women and children were paid next to nothing to pick tea for large brands- many people buying this tea would be unaware the conditions from where it came.

b) Great piece of architecture

I find the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore to be an example of great architecture because of its very unique shape and design. As the largest hotel in Singapore it was actually one of the quickest to be built (in relation to its size), a new floor was built every four days during the construction period. As found on the 'Marina Bay Sands Fun Facts Sheet', it is very complex. Each of the three towers has sloping and straight legs that meet at floor 23, seamlessly merging into one building.

c) Original photograph of something beautiful
This is an original photo that I took from the top of the Basel Munster in Switzerland on my travels during 2017. To get to here we had to climb up several small ladders and squeeze along the small gaps left between the wall of the building and the decorative railings. It was very cold as it had just snowed- very different to an Australian winter.
